Confirming iCloud Data Loss

As part of Apple's migration from iCloud to iCloud Drive, there tends to be a bit of a delay in seeing your entries reappear in Day One. (For more details about iCloud Drive see: iCloud Drive FAQ.)

To confirm whether or not your entries are still in iCloud, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage > Day One
  2. To the far right of Documents & Data, you should see the amount of data (in MB) stored on your device. Depending upon your journal size and the amount of photographic entries you have, this should be 50 MB or higher, and is a pretty good indication that your data has not been permanently lost, but is just not appearing in Day One (yet).
  3. Tap Journal_dayone.
  4. Tap entries (or photos), then you should see the filenames of your entries (or photos) listed.

If it looks like your data is still available in iCloud, it is likely there is a delay in getting your data to reappear in Day One. You should see something at the top of the Main Menu in Day One that shows entries/photos/data are downloading. If you don't see this, or it appears to be frozen, toggle iCloud syncing off/on in Day One, reboot your device, then come back to Day One. You should see something that indicates entries are downloading. It will take some time, but they will come back eventually. Ideally, keep Day One open and active as the entries download.

Data Recovery Options

If data loss occurred, there are several options available for restoring your data. In descending order of preference, these options include:

  1. Day One Mac Automatic Journal Backups
  2. Mac OS X Time Machine Backups
  3. iTunes File Sharing Backups
  4. iOS Device Backups

A. Day One Mac Automatic Journal Backups

Data available: Text and Photos

The Mac version of Day One automatically backs up your entire journal at specified intervals when your Mac is opened. If you don't open your Mac app periodically, your journal will not be backed up. The default setting for backups is every two days with a maximum of 20 backups stored at any time. These default settings can be changed in Day One Mac > Preferences > Backup.

B. Mac OS X Time Machine Backups

Data available: Text and Photos

If you have Time Machine backups and use the same iCloud account on all your devices, you may be able to find some of your entries using a Time Machine backup. Note that this applies even if you only have Day One on a mobile device, but your computer is a Mac; it's not necessary to have the Mac version of Day One.

Follow these steps:

Finding Journal Data in Time Machine

  1. Open Finder, and paste this path into Go > Go to Folder: ~/Library/Mobile Documents/5U8NS4GX82~com~dayoneapp~dayone/Documents/Journal_dayone   Tap the Go button.
  2. Click the Time Machine icon in the menubar, then click 'Enter Time Machine.'
  3. Choose a past date in Time Machine that you think should have a copy of your missing content.
  4. Control-click the “entries” folder inside the “Journal_dayone” folder, then click "Get Info" to view details of this folder.
  5. In the folder details window, find the number of items in the folder.
  6. If the number of items matches the number of entries in your journal prior to data loss, copy the “entries” and “photos” folders to your current Mac Desktop.
  7. If the number of items seems wrong, repeat steps 1-4 until you find a suitable backup.

Restoring Entries and Photos to Your Journal Using Dropbox Sync

Once you’ve found the best backup source on Time Machine, merge your entries and photos with Day One. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Open Day One on your Mac and switch the sync method from iCloud to Dropbox. See:  Switching Day One Syncing Methods. If you don't have a Dropbox account, see: Creating a Dropbox Account.
  2. Enable Dropbox sync on your Mac: Day One > Preferences > Sync
  3. Follow the onscreen directions for completing Dropbox sync setup.
  4. Quit Day One.
  5. Go to Dropbox > Apps > Day One in Finder.
  6. Control-click Journal.dayone, then click “Show Package Contents.” You’ll see two folders: “entries” and “photos.” Keep this window open.
  7. In a new Finder window, navigate to your backup entries and photos, then drag them to their corresponding folders (step 6). As you drag files, you may be alerted about duplicate filenames. Check the “Apply to All” box, then click the “Skip” button.
  8. Open Day One to see all your entries. (It may take a few moments for all your entries to appear.)

Restoring Entries and Photos to Your Journal Using iCloud Sync

It is possible to continue using iCloud, but we recommend you do not, especially since the data loss originated when using iCloud. Nevertheless, if you choose to use iCloud, copy the entries you found to their corresponding folders in this location: ~/Library/Mobile Documents/5U8NS4GX82~com~dayoneapp~dayone/ After doing this, open Day One and your entries should be restored.

C. iTunes File Sharing Backups

Data available: Text

Day One makes a backup of the text portion of the user's journal entries just before Day One is updated; the first time Day One is opened after iOS is updated; and once a week (the app has to be open for a weekly backup to take place). The 20 most recent backups are retained.

These backups are stored within the Day One area in the filesystem of the mobile device, and are accessible via the File Sharing area in iTunes. Please note: any time you delete Day One, all previous backups are also deleted, as they are stored in the Day One area in the device filesystem.

To recover entries via a Mac or PC, follow these steps:

  1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC.
  2. Connect your iOS device. (Dismiss any prompts or stop any processes to back up your device.)
  3. Select the iOS device in the sidebar or top-bar (depending upon your version of iTunes), then go to the Apps tab.
  4. Scroll down to the “File Sharing” section, then click Day One in the list of apps. 
  5. Click the Backups folder, then click the “Save to…” button and save the folder to your Desktop.
  6. PC Users: Zip this folder and send it to the Day One Support Team via this form—
  7. Mac users: Proceed to the section 'Restoring Data using a Mac' found below.

D. iOS Device Backups

Data available: Text

This option is available only for backups that were created when your device was/is running iOS 7. There is no such option for backups that were created in iOS 8.0 or later.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Install iExplorer on your computer. The free version can be downloaded here:
  2. Open iExplorer.
  3. Using the following graphic as a guide, find the Day One content in the backup. 

  1. Right-click/control-click each item indicated in the above image, then click “Export to Folder,” and save it somewhere on your computer.
  2. PC Users: Zip this folder and send it to the Day One Support Team via this form—
  3. Mac users: Proceed to the section 'Restoring Data using a Mac' found below.

Restoring Data using a Mac

After finding a backup folder using an iTunes File Sharing Backup or an iOS Device Backup (options C or D above), follow these steps to restore your data:

NOTE: Dropbox syncing is required for restoring your data. If you don't have a Dropbox account, see this article for steps to do this: Creating a Dropbox Account.

  1. Open Day One Mac.
  2. Enable Dropbox syncing for Day One on all your devices, if you were using iCloud syncing.
  3. Create an entry with a photo.
  4. Go to the timeline view in Day One Mac, then right-click on the entry you created and select "Show Entry in Finder." A Finder window containing your journal entries will be opened.
  5. Install and open Mend, a Mac app for restoring Day One entry files. 
  6. Open the Backups folder you saved on your Desktop.
  7. Inside this folder you may find several sub-folders named with their creation date. Open the folder with the latest date.
  8. In this folder you’ll find a “Journal.sqlite” file. Drag and drop this file into Mend.
  9. Click “Export Journal…” and save the “Export.dayone” file to a new folder called “DO_backup” on your Desktop.
  10. Repeat steps 7 and 8 with any other sub-folders referred to in step 6. With each subsequent file you export, add an incrementing number to the filename (Example: “Export2.dayone”).
  11. Once you’ve completed this, open “DO_backup.”
  12. Right-click/control-click “Export.dayone,” then click “Show Package Contents.”
  13. Open the “entries” folder. (Note: The photos folder is empty. There is no way to recover photos with this method of data recovery.)
  14. Create a “recovered_entries” folder on your Desktop, then drag the files from the “entries” folder (step 12) to this folder.
  15. Repeat steps 11 and 12 for each “Export.dayone” file.
  16. As you drag files into the “recovered_entries” folder, you may be alerted about duplicate filenames. Check the “Apply to All” box, then click the “Skip” button.
  17. Once you have copied over all unique files to the “recovered_entries” folder, quit Day One, if it is currently open.
  18. Go to Dropbox > Apps > Day One in Finder.
  19. Control-click Journal.dayone, then click “Show Package Contents.” You’ll see two folders: “entries” and “photos.”
  20. Open the “entries” folder, then drag your files from the “recovered_entries” folder to the “entries” folder. As in step 16, skip all duplicate files.
  21. Open Day One to see all your entries.

Restoring Data using a PC or iOS device

NOTE WELL: This section applies only to those who have located their iTunes FileSharing backups per Section C above; do not have a Mac to use for the recovery; and have sent the backups to us for processing. 

Please follow these steps when Day One staff have recovered some of your content from the backup folder that you submitted to us, and have sent you a zip file containing the recovered entries. This process requires you to switch to Dropbox for syncing; you can sign up for Dropbox here.

(Note: Keep in mind that this is just the text, not the photos, of your entries—you'll have to manually find and add your photos back to your entries.)

  1. Download and open the .zip file sent to you by Day One Support.
  2. Inside the unzipped file, you'll find an "entries" folder.
  3. Log into the Dropbox app on your devices and PC/Mac.
  4. Open Day One on your iOS device.
  5. Go to Day One > Settings > Sync.
  6. Tap the toggle next to Dropbox to enable Dropbox syncing and disable iCloud syncing.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup for Dropbox sync.
  8. After successfully setting up Dropbox, create a new entry with a photo in Day One. This entry must have a photo.
  9. Go to the following location in your Dropbox account using your PC/Mac (or browser by logging into Apps > Day One > Journal.dayone > entries. (If you use Mac, you'll need to right-click on the Journal.dayone and "show package contents.")
  10. Drag the entry files (from step 2 above) into the "entries" folder (step 9) in Dropbox.
  11. Open the Day One app. During the next few minutes, you should see your entries appear in your journal.
  12. In your existing ticket with Day One support, let us know when you're finished with recovering your data.
